Early and Large Guy Vidal cufflinks with a textural globular design. These cufflinks are highly sculpted and wonderfully abstract. This is one of Guy Vidal's earliest works of wearable art and is possibly one of a kind. Absolutely Striking, great piece by a wonderful Canadian designer.
Vidal was a true master at sculptural pieces of wearable art, his work contains depth, texture and stunning stylized design. Often regarded as the best of the Canadian Modernists of the 1960-70's due to his unique and highly stylized designs. His earliest designs were signed by marker.
This piece has been verified by Guy Vidal himself. Here is a portion of the email we shared. :
Guy Vidal "I took a look at your jewelry and I can see the signature made with a marker. These pieces are done at the very beginning of my career, in the early 60's, and at the time, I did not have yet a hallmark stamp to identify my work. That is why I did signed my work with an ink marker for a while. So the jewelry are very rare pieces because it is one of a kind as at the time I was doing the pieces directly on a hot ceramic bed while the metal was still hot and workable with a wooden tool. The first series I made were all one of a kind because I did not know how to reproduce them in molds yet. I had found this particular method of working the metal with wooden sticks and yet I was making myself, I was learning the trade of pewtersmith."
Cufflink face measures approx. 1" tall x .75" wide Hallmarked in marker (his earliest signature) "G. Vidal" Good vintage condition with original dark patina. *this listing is for the 1 pair of cufflinks only.
